Robie House- Seth Gebhart

This is the Robie House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is located in Chicago Illinois and was the home of the Robie family. This past spring break I had the opportunity to go to Chicago on a vacation. I was able to experience this house inside and out by taking a tour of the home. Going in to the tour I knew the basics about Frank Lloyd Wright and who he was as an architect. After going into the home and seeing other pieces of architecture throughout Chicago the city and the architecture gave me a better perspective and understanding of how architecture developed holistically as well as why Wright was such a well known architect and mark in architecture was so important.  For example in the Robie House Wright began to use more glass than other architects had previously. He experimented with large windows and using materials such as steel to place in between the windows to make the home work structurally and visually allowing more natural light to enter into buildings than ever before. This development in architecture and in Chicago at the time was a great leap. It led to Mies Van De Rohe continuing the trend to develop and produce buildings with even larger spans of windows by using steel. This home both beautiful and innovative is in my opinion by far one of the most innovative homes of this time.
