Douglas House by Richard Meier- Seth Gebhart

 Douglas House by Richard Meier

This is the Douglas House by Richard Meier located in Harbor Springs, Michigan. The home built in 1971 is a breathtaking home. The house uses natural light. The designer Richard Meier expresses the contrast between light and shadow. In addition he also changes spatial scales from tight interior spacing to more open interior spacing. As you can see in section and elevation views Meier uses ramps, walkways, and vertical changes to move from space to space. Meir uses many subtraction techniques where he uses masses and forms. Through out the design process Meier subtracts massing out of the volume. The house is an opposite and contrasting object with in the landscape that it lies. I personally like the way this house appears. I have yet been able to visit this house but would like to one day. Richard Meier is a great architect and an architect that I particularly look to for design inspiration.
