7) The Basket House - Taylor Johnson

The Basket House is actually the headquarters for the Longaberger Company, a manufacturer and distributor of handcrafted maple wood baskets. Located in Newark, Ohio, this building has become a local landmark. It takes the shape of the company's best selling item, the medium market basket.

The building is made of stucco over a steel structure. The handles are 150 tons and are able to be heated to prevent ice damage. As seen below, there is a skylight on top of the building that lets light in to the seven floor 30,000 square foot atrium.

6) The House of Stone - Taylor Johnson

The House of Stone, or Casa do Penedo, was built in the Fafe mountains of northern Portugal. Built as a family's retreat in 1974, the house is made with four large boulders on the site and is said to include many modern amenities such as a fireplace and swimming pool. Recent attention has cause the owner to have to move and install bullet proof windows and doors because of vandalism.

This house is interesting because of how it fits into the natural environment. You would almost miss the house if you were not specifically looking for it.

(1) Shipping Container Housing by Jared Zettl

I am quite fascinated with shipping container housing. I think that it is a well purposed idea that can exist anywhere. They can be built to any specification with all the modern amenities any could want.

They vary in many ways, from nice and simple to very extravagant. There are limitless options when producing a house out of one or more of the shipping containers. Another nice thing about them is if you have to move, just lock everything down and call a truck to ship it where you are going.

5) The Piano House - Taylor Johnson

The Piano House is located in Huainan City, An Hui Province, China and wasbuilt in 2007 by architectural students at Hefei University of Technology. It contains a transparent violin and a piano building. The violin acts as the entry way,and includes a staircase toward the piano house upstairs. This building was built for music lovers and acts as a performance and practicing place for music students from the local college in Huainan City, in east China. It also displays various city plans and development prospects in an effort to draw interest into the recently developed area.

I like this building because it can be utilized in different ways. Obviously it is a place for music lovers to come and practice or just listen to others play but it can also be a place for outdoor events and picnics since the bottom is open. Also, as it says above those that built the Piano House are trying to draw interest in development from the locals by displaying plans inside.

--- 12 ---Capital Hill Residence - Luan Vinicius

The Capital Hill residence is a project by Zaha Hadid Architects and it is located in Barvikha Forest close to Moscow, Russia. It is a project commissioned for the Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin to his supermodel girlfriend Naomi Campbell. According to the client, he wanted a home that resembles a spaceship style. With an unique and exotic style, the home features 2 separate sections: the first one is the main one jutting out from the earth and the other rising high into the sky for views of the area. The program is divided vertically on four levels: The lower level includes a living room, massage and fitness areas, as well as a sauna . One level up on the ground floor is the main living room, dining space, kitchen, entertainment and indoor swimming room and parking spaces. The first floor contains the main entrance lobby, study/library, guest room and children’s room. The master bedrooms and a lounge with an exterior terrace occupy the upper level.

--- 11 ---Porsche Pavilion - Luan Vinicius

The Porsche Pavilion is a project by Henn Architekten situated in Wolfsburg, Germany. It was projected to represent the union between the Volkswagen Group and Porsche. Inside the pavilion there are presentations and exhibitions. The organic shape is compound by a structure of iron and concrete. Around 620 sheets of stainless steel cladding with welded ribs were prefabricated in a ship-yard in Stralsund and assembled on site. The most interesting thing about this design is that the structure is trying to represent the dynamic flow of driving with a seamless building skin. This is absolutely one of my favorites projects. The simple and strong design that establish a really amazing connection with the landscape is what caught my attention. The pavilion looks like is rising from the ground and almost “kissing” the reflection pool, what turns this project not only a spectacular project, but also a real poem.

4. Casa de Vidro (Glass House) , Lina Bo Bardi - by Camila Figueiredo

The Glass house.
The Glass house was created by the Architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) in 1951. The Project was the first house in the neighbourhood of Morumbi, south part of Sao Paulo City, in Brazil. At the same period, the Glass House was developed by Phillip Johnson in Connecticut and the Farnsworth House, By Mies Van der Rohe in Illinois, both in United States.  The three projects have some similarities, like the large panes of glass and lightness of the structure. However, each project contrast individually.
View of the parking.
Initially, the Glass House was home to Lina and her husband Pietro Maria Bardi. The intention of Lina was preserved the natural land, so she designed pilotis to support the house and to make the parking. The structure were built in slender tubes of steel and concrete. The principal access to the upper floor was conceived through the open stairs.
The house is divided in two portions. The first one is the social area, composed by dining and living rooms that sets the translucent space of the house, formed by large panes of glass. In this area, Lina maintained a tree in a courtyard that works as a climatic element. The second area is composed for dorms and service area, characterized as massive and opaque part.
In 1987, the Glass House was listed by the CONDEPHAAT (the CONDEPHAAT is a
Social Area.
Advice composed of representatives from various entities to discuss the processes relating to the cultural heritage) as a historical heritage of the state of São Paulo. The building is the headquarters of the “Instituto Lina Bo and Pietro Maria Bardi” and it gathers part of the art collection acquired by the couple throughout their lives.
