The Illinois Residence is one of those houses I like just
for how beautiful it is and how dynamic the forms within and without are. It has
actually inspired the form of the roof planes of my studio project this year,
although the pavilion-style separation of programmatic spaces wouldn’t have
been appropriate for my site, or even for Norman for that matter.
It is very much a house that depends on its site for
validation – the rolling roof planes reflect the movement of the natural
landscape surrounding the house and provide the necessary drama that makes the
residence more than just a sprawled collection of house parts.
The clean lines that result from the choice of stone, wood
and glass as the exterior materials contrast pleasantly with the prairie
grasses and purposely wild plantings that make up the landscaping.
The interior finishes all contribute to a very clean
aesthetic – pale woods and plaster allow the ceiling plane to take center
stage, and the overall effect is very beautiful. Large open spaces bathed in
sunlight and greenery make this large, luxurious home stand out as a personal
favorite.
