(7) Villa Krona - James Duke

Villa Krona has been a favorite of mine for a long time – located in Finland, it is a bizarre home that makes the most of its site and, as a vacation home, does a very good job of establishing an almost anti-urban feel, despite its strong modern lines and sleek materials which contrast strongly with the rough granite it perches upon and draws inspiration from.

I love the choice of larch for the exterior cladding. Since it weathers grey, as the building ages it will merge even more completely with the surroundings, while the pine and ash interior will remain warm and welcoming against the cold of Baltic winters.

The sod-style roof, which is popular in Scandinavia, complements the home perfectly and adds to the sense that this is a place in harmony with nature as it overlooks the sea from its small island.

I think the best way I could sum up my feelings about Villa Krona would be to say that it exudes a contradictory but wonderful sense of simplistic complexity and a very modern naturalism.
