Designed by Juan Pablo Corvalan and
Gabriel Vergara, the Kiltro house has an area of 104 sqm and is located in a
slope hill in the Central Valley, an uninhabited just five minutes from Talca,
Chile.
The floor plan is based on a basic
square which evolved the house converting into an irregular volume.
The 104 sqm corresponds to a large
open space set around a courtyard, which includes a kitchen to the living room
and dining room attached to an office, two spaces together perfectly
interchangeable. The part of the program more stable component which includes
the master bedroom suite and terrace with views, and a study or additional
guest room next to the main bathroom is located. All spaces are connected
internally and externally with the yard together with a continuous walkway
surrounding the house.
The most
interesting thing about this house is the wooden deck with 360 degree views
over the valley, which functions as a structural complement to absorb the
horizontal forces of an earthquake. In addition the wooden deck helps to
protect the house from the sun during the summer, very strong in central Chile.
Its shape and slope was calculated to allow natural light through the windows
first thing in the morning in summer and most of the day in winter, when the
sun is at a lower angle. Most of the glass walls of the house can be opened to
allow natural cross ventilation between the courtyard and the outer walls,
allowing natural temperature regulation.
