Timberline Lodge - Simon Ott

The Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood in Oregon was built in 1936-38 as a Public Works Project.  The lodge was built on site by several skilled workers - masons, carpenters, metal workers.  It took 15 months to build after clearing the site.  It was dedicated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937.  The workmanship and carvings have survived through 77 years despite a the lodge falling into disrepair until being restored in the 1980's.  The exterior was featured in the movie the Shining with Jack Nicolson.  It is a wonderful piece of history in a beautiful setting and is regularly enjoyed by many.
When I visited, I was struck by the amount of raw skill and labor involved in its construction the like of which may be almost lost today.  The architectural design fully utilizes the natural materials of the region and the abilities of the workers.  Just one of the many examples of what we can be capable of when we put our minds and hands to it.
